I have tried to upgrade two Dell GX200 machines running Windows 98 to Windows
XP Professional using the Upgrade Package of XP Professional. When I run the
compatibility advisor on either Dell, I recieve a fatal error at exactly the
same place,"checking system files";DVD movie player. I have checked bios
settings and memory allocations on both machines and cannot detect any
conflict. Could anyone suggest a solution for this problem?

Well, if the Upgrade Advisor won't run on those computers, it's not
very likely that you'll have have any success installing WinXP. You can
try removing the offending software to see if the Advisor can get past
that test, but I suspect that the PCs are just too old to support WinXP.
