which key on the keyboard is the pound sign when using windows xp
professional because when i press the arrow and 3 button it is coming up with
# and not the pound sign

At least two ways to do it, assuming the font you're using includes the
British pound symbol:
1. Type 00A3 (that's zero zero A three) and press Alt+X.
or
2. Press Alt+0163 (hold down the Alt key, type zero one six three from
the numeric keypad, not the top row of number keys on the keyboard, and
release the Alt key).

If you are in the UK and need the pound sign routinely, you should switch to
a UK keyboard layout.
