Using shortcuts on an external drive.

I have reason to use shortcuts in a file structure I am building. But
the directories and files are on an external harddrive. When I move it
from one machine to another the drive letter assigned changes, and the
shortcuts no longer work.

Is there a work-around? Mapping the drive to a particular drive letter
isn't an option, as I have no control over some of the computer which I
attach the drive to.

How about mapping the drive to the system variable like %HOMEDRIVE%

I've never mapped a drive (other than network drives, and then they are
mapped to specific drive letters). I'll have to do a bit of studying,
but I suspect you have the solution to the problem.

Thanks a lot.

Hi Cyril,

I have a utility thumb-drive that I carry with me everywhere to work
on people's computers, and I ran into the same problem. I ended up
just writing a menu program in Clarion that gives me a menu and
allows me to access programs from whatever device letter the
thumb-drive is.

Note, that if you are doing something similar, you want to make sure
that the programs are portable, and all of their support files are
on the thumb-drive.
