Using RIS to deploy XP

Guest

I'm trying to setup RIS to deploy XP unattended. I was successful in
deploying XP with the exception of adding the NIC drivers which means I could
join the domain, etc..

Is it possible to inject the NIC drivers into the deployment process? I
tried following this article
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/314479 but when I changed the
OEMPreinstal from NO to YES I get a blusescreen after the hard drive is
formatted and the XP files are copied.
Thanks!

Hi Jim,

the article you refer to is not entirely correct for your needs.

the procedure for a Ris install is as follows

root\i386
- - \$oem$\$1
- - - - - - - - - \Drivers
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - \NIC
etc...

in short, create the folder $oem$ at the same level as i386. Everything in
$1 will then be copied to your systemdrive (c:\)
Then make sure that your sif-file in i386\templates contains:

[Unattended]
OemPnPDriversPath = Drivers\NIC;Drivers\Modem;Drivers\Video

good luck..

Is this an RISETUP or RIPREP image? Different procedures apply for each.
RISETUP is used to deploy just Windows XP itself.
RIPREP is used to create an image of a reference PC with the OS and apps all
installed and configured.

I assume you mean RISETUP , then the instructions for "RIS Installations"
are the correct ones.

Tijs:

you seem to have good tips for RIS i have a problem with a lenovo t60 laptop
not seeing the hard drive when i try to pull down an image the pxe boot to
the installation all goes properly to the point of begining to copy files and
when the installation would normally go to the format drive phase .....bang
...no hard drives detected on . is there a way to put serial hard drive
drivers somewhere like NIC drivers that i'm just not seeing.

and what would you name the folder in the $oem$ even if you did find it.??

i'm at a loss
