Hi,

Not sure if this is the correct forum for this question but here goes...
Using Windows XP Pro and I'm trying to write a procedure for using a
specific software product and want to get a screen shot of the application
when one of the menus is open. Problem is that when I hit the Alt key it
closes the menu. I can hit just the Print Scrn button but that gets the
whole desktop, which I don't want. I want just the application with the
menu open. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance,
Linn

Use a bitmap editing program to crop the image.

How about Gadwins Print Screen 3.1 - Its so easy to use.
Go here - if you like it then its a free download - it is well liked in
forums which I read before I downloaded.

paste it to microsoft photo editor, photshop, or something else. That also
allows you to crop, comment, add arrows, and save as jpeg or something
smaller than bitmap.

Hey Linn,

your goal can be achieved by continuous use of the Alt key:

In the application you want to grab a shot of, hold down the Alt key and
then hit F to open the file menu (or E for edit menu, H for help or
whatever). DO NOT LET GO OF THE ALT KEY AT THIS POINT. You can now
highlight the menu item you want to using your mouse pointer (while still
holding the Alt key down) and when you've moused-over the menu item you want
hit the Print Screen button.

You'll get your menu screenshot, minus your Taskbar (a useful bonus).

Hope that helps - Matt

Oh, look at that, very nice. Exactly what I was looking for. I did try
this technique but tried using the arrow keys, they didn't work in the
application I'm using. Didn't think to try the mouse.

Thanks Matt and everyone else who posted. I also like the idea of using the
image editors to add arrows, circles and whatever. Very useful in
procedural documentation.

Thanks Much,
Linn
