Using one phone line for answering machine and Fax

Since I only have one telephone line into my home, is it possible to connect an answering machine at one outlet to receive voice messages and my computer at another outlet in order to receive faxes via Microsoft Fax? In other words, if I set up Fax to auto-receive is the system capable of recognizing and receiving data calls and ignoring voice calls, which can then be handled by my answering machine. Am I asking for too much?

Too bad. Thanks for the advice. By the way, in another posting, I noticed that someone made reference to an external switching device. Do you know if something like that would divert the voice calls to my answering machine?

Just a few of those "out there". You need "distinctive ring" feature from
your Telco, by whatever name they call it., to use the device.
