Got a Dell with Windows Home Basic (build 6000) desktop made by Gateway
T5082 and the usual other "stuff".
My problem is: I use notepad to open a text file called TELE_NOS.TXT. Both
files are in the same directory.
I add an additional phone number in the same format; but when I attempt to
save the file I get:TELE_NOS.TXT already exists; do you wish to replace it?
When I click yes, I get: Cannot create the C:\TELE_NOS.TXT file.
Make sure that the path and file name are correct.
Now I click ok and try to close the file and get "do you want to save the
changes. The only way out is to say
dont save. Is there a secret prayer I'm not reciting correctly?

Try saving the file on the desktop or in a location on your public folder. If it works then permissions may need to be set or not avaialble for that location.

What do you mean by "both files"? Do you have more than one instance of
this file open?

What directory is this file in? It may be a permissions problem. Try moving
it to your Documents directory.

Hi Wm.

It has to do with the eggregiously horrendous excecution of UAC which of
course MSFT expects to make them a lot of bucks with the customers that
really matter to them--enterprises. They could care less about end users
but that certainly doesn't mean that a CTO or an IT maven that knocks down 6
figures for an enterprise has a clue of how to use Vista or UAC in any more
effective or sophisticated way than a lot of us who help here.

Yes there is a secret prayer. It's part of the Redmond MSFT mistique.
They resort to it all the time when they can't fix things to work well and
the thousands of Vista team members have done it to the max.

You need to right click the file>properties>security tab>click on user
profile you want to use or perhaps edit>add>users>give the profile all
permissions in the available checkboxes>and then it should allow you to save
it the way it used to allow you to save a notepad in XP.

Indiffierent America--filling Dover coffins with people who aren't in their
family into infinity until a draft is applied uniformly. That'll wake 'em
up; stop 'em from shopping long enough to take to the streets with their gas
guzzling unsafe SUVs and insist their kid ain't goin.

While little moron has dinner for the queen, explosions are killing hundreds
a day. It's "part of the progress." But if someone took an axe to all your
PCs, notebooks, origamiesque devices, smart phones, etc. and said "it's part
of the progress 6 more months" you'd be a bit upset.

DOJ a political cat house--you betcha. Indifferent America doesn't care
until they get targeted. Dems are prosecuted 10 to1`currently and illegally
party affiliation is required as well as Federalist Society membership to
get a job at DOJ The crappier your law school, ask Monica Goodling if you
can find her--the more power you get at Main Justice.

You are trying to save in a restricted location, save your files in
Documents or similar, not in the Windows directory.
