Can't save HTML file

C. Roy Blye

Hi,

I can create and save an HTML file but can't save changes to an existing
HTML file.

When trying to save using Notepad, the error window says:

Cannot create the
C:\Users\Roy\Desktop\WebPages\test.html file
Make sure that the path and file name are correct.

When trying to save using Notepad++, the error window says:

Save failed
Please check whether if (sic) this file is opened in another program.

What I can do with Notepad (I haven't tried any work-around with Notepad++)
is to first save the .html file as a .txt file, then open the .txt file and
successfully save it as a .html file. I tell you this as a possible
diagnostic clue; it is by no means an acceptable fix.

This problem appeared suddenly out of the blue. I can think of nothing that
might have caused it. I have tried the usual stuff, such as re-booting, but
nothing has worked.

Thanks for your help,
Roy

PS - If there is a more appropriate group to post this question at, please
let me know.

Perhaps this is a more succinct way of describing the problem:

I can save a .txt file as a .txt file;
I can save a .txt file as a .html file;
I can save a .html file as a .txt file;
I CAN"T save a .html file as a .html file.

Thanks,
Roy

did you recently upgrade to ie8?
this seems like an issue i had after i upgraded to ie8
turned out to be problem with registering a DLL file.
the issue caused some other problems also but the fix
to try (and it cant hurt if it doesnt help)
fixed mine and i had to redo it a couple times since
for whatever reasons so if it works hold onto it somewhere.

* open a new "Command Prompt" window by right-clicking
and selecting "Run as administrator"
* at the prompt, run the command "regsvr32 actxprxy.dll"

Geez - I thought ms systems were not required to use the command line.

No, I haven't upgraded; still using IE7.

I think I would need more detailed instructions to follow your suggestion.
Also, I would probably want a second opinion before fooling with the
registry.

Thanks

OK, I tried it and it didn't work. I'm going to re-post my problem later in
hopes that new eyes may see it. Thanks.
