Using Excel to open CSV Downloads

From the Yahoo Portfolio page, I download my portfolio.
It is downloaded in CSV format. Prior to yesterday, IE6
displayed the portfolio in Excel format, and when I would
use Saved AS, I could choose the Excel format. As of
yesterday, after clicking on the Download button on the
Yahoo page, the data is displayed as raw data in CSV
format... I am using XP. Under files types the CSV
type is to be opened by Excel. What has caused my
process to change? Thanks. Tom

What happens if you try to open a local .csv file using IE?
If that works it may mean that the MIME type of the download
is not consistent with the filename extension. Therefore, just
do a right-click Save As... and open the file that you save.
It may also help in that case to notify the site's administrator
of your difficulty.

Thanks Robert, but let me explain further... While in IE6, I click on the
Download button in Yahoo....previously, IE would open Excel in the IE
window, and display the CSV data in a spreadsheet format... From there I was
able to go to FILE, and Save As, Excel 5.x format... Now, IE will not open
Excel inside the IE window...thus I have it as a HTML file. tom

You haven't answered my question nor as far as I can tell done the
the test I suggested but I will assume that the answer to the above
is that it opens an Excel window?

Internet Explorer</title>

Reverse the settings that the article suggests to do what you want.

Robert, Yes, I am able to drop a .csv file into my IE6 window, and it is
opened using Excel Spreadsheet. I am using Excel 2000, XP, and IE6. I
went to .XLS in File Types and removed the Check in "Browse in the same
window", clicked OK. (the apply was not highlighted). That did not solve
my problem even after restarting the computer. When I look in the registry,
I fine: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Excel.Sheet.8 with Browser
Flags, REG_DWORD, 0x00000008 (8). I believe my settings are what the
KB162059 document suggests.
Are you asking me to reverse these settings??? Should I put the Check back
in the "Browse in the same window"? If so, what should the Registry show?
I'm confused? Thanks. Tom
