using "DC=...,DC=...,DC=..." as the base object?

How might I perform searches using "DC=...,DC=...,DC=..." as my base
object? I get a "Search: Operations error" when I try, yet Active
Directory Explorer seems to be able to search all the "base"
organizational units and I'm not really sure how. It'll find stuff in
OU=whatever1,DC=...,DC=...,DC=... and
OU=whatever2,DC=...,DC=...,DC=.... Any ideas as to how?

Maybe it performs multiple queries? If so, how does it find out the
names of the "base" organizational units to begin with?

That might be a really dumb question to ask - but since I'm not afraid
of being dumb, I'll just ask: What's "Active Directory Explorer"? The
free tool from Sysinternals? Can you use "RootDSE" for the search?

cheers,

Yup - I'm referring to the Sysinternals tool:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963907.aspx

Also, I tried using "RootDSE" as the search for a particular baseDN
(not the root baseDN), but got a "Search: Bad search filter" error. I
tried using it as my baseDN and got a "Search: Invalid DN syntax"
error.
