I have a worksheet with 2 non-adjacent cols containing various Text
values. I need to count the number of line items with different
combinations of the two columns.

ColA ColE

Remove SSCM
Install Shelf
Remove SSCM

I need the total Remove SSCM tried using COUNTIF but can't get it
to work with 2 conditions

as a quick solution adjunct to Frank's reply

=SUMPRODUCT(--(A1:A100="Remove"),--(E1:E100="SSCM"))

Thanks much that works but if someone could explain why I would be
grateful.....

Frank gave you that - which is why I said it was an adjunct to Frank's
response :).

 I have searched and read and tried every solution posted an
none of the solutions are working for my scenario. I have Column C wit
Text (value repeats) and Column D with Text (value repeats) in which
need to count how many of times certain text in Column C match certai
text in D. The formulas given in this forum and the websites provide
(including this thread) are not working. Example:

Column C could contain the text

Active
Consulting
Courtesy
Provisional
Locum Tenens
LOA
Honrorary
Inactive

and Column D could contain the text
Anesthesiology
Cardiology
Dentist
Dermatology
Emergency Medicine
Endocrinology
Family Practice
Gastroenterology
General Surgery
Gynecology
Hematology Oncology
Internal Medicine
Neurology
Neurosurgery
OB/GYN
Ophthalmology
Orthopedic Surgery
Otolaryngology
Pathology
Pediatrics
Plastic Surgery
Podiatry
Psychiatry
Radiation Oncology
Radiology
Urology

and I want to count how many occurences where Column C matches up wit
each
occurence of Column D so that I wind up with a count of how many o
each type of specialty and each status
