Using a USB Drive for a truly 'roaming' profile

Hello,

Wondering about this, and can't seem to find anything on the internet
about it, which leads me to believe there might be some technical issue
making it impossible, but...

How would I set up my USB drive to contain a roaming profile in Windows
- either 2000 or XP pro? The environment would be a 2003SBS, with the
majority of the desktops running 2000Pro. I'd want a user to be able to
plug their USB drive into the PC, then log onto the computer & have
their profile loaded from the USB drive (would they have to have the
USB drive plugged in prior to the PC being turned on? Will Windows
assign the drive letter to the USB drive without a user login in?)

I realize that roaming profiles on the network can do the same, just
wondering if it's possible using a removable drive... Do I need to set
this up in Active Directory (ie: giving it a drive letter instead of a
UNC path)?

Thanks in advance, looking forward to trying this @ work, but I'm off
for a couple days and it's something I was thinking about tonight...
any advance information/direction that you can provide would be
helpful.

Thanks.

Should read

"I'd want a user to be able to plug their USB drive into any PC in our
domain, then log onto..."

Thanks in advance.
