Using a TOC in a Master document

B

Barbara

I have created a master doc importing existing
subdocuments, I've created a TOC, saved the master doc and
closed it.

When I open the master document it appears with the TOC
and the links to the subdocuments.

Is there a way to click on the TOC and go to the right
paragraph within the right subdocument?

Currently what I have to do is to expand all the
subdocuments from the outline view of the master doc and
then navigate via the TOC. This is not user friendly and
the file cannot be distributed to other team menbers
without a readme.txt that describes how to use it!

Thank you
Barbara

G'day "Barbara" <[email protected]>,

You could include an AutoOpen macro / This Document_Open event handler
with the document that contains an

ActiveDocument.SubDocuments.Expanded=True

Steve, thank you!
It works fine, I can finally automate the opening of the
subdocuments and the TOC works as it should!

G'day "Barbara" <[email protected]>,

Additionally, please do not give them access to your development
versions, and if possible set the publish copy's target dir to be read
only to the readers so they don't forever update the subs and cause
rapid crashes of the document.

Word Heretic ,

Thanks for this post. Do you have a method of setting up master documents
to be used on line, worldwide.

I am trying to set up a batch file that will put all of the templates in
place on a local harddrive of the user. I am using Visio, Excel, PowerPoint
files embedded in the Word subdocuments that go into a Master Document. I
have the procedures written and tested.

All the documents, not the development versions, are stored on a web server
document vault assessible over the Internet by userid and password.

I want users to see download one file and it self-extracts, runs the batch
file to do the one time setup, opens the Word Master documents with
subdocuments open and all the related files are located in the right places
on the hard drive.

Any ideas or attempts to do this in the past? The goal is to serve novice
Word users worldwide to get their edits and approval on the subdocuments
sections they are stakeholders or approvers for. I will then merge or cut
and paste changes into the development subdocuments and reissue the master to
the web serve document vault.

Thanks,
