My laptop utilizes windows xp professional.
An old program written for microsoft dos is unable to
read a licenced key installed on the parellel port and so
does not operate.
Is there any way I can fix this problem.

What program is it? Their could be a new version of it
for Windows XP.
Unfortunately, while many DOS programs will work with XP, the necessity
of using a dongle with yours will probably preclude it working
successfully. You will need to contact the software mftr.'s tech
support. If they don't exist or don't have a version for XP, I'm sorry
but you'll need to either keep an older machine around to run this
program or find a different program that will work with XP.

Good luck,

Malke

If the old DOS program is trying to directly read from the parallel
prot without going through the OS, then I think your chances of
getting it to run are slim. XP won't allow old DOS program to
directly access hardware.

Both Win2K and WinXP, like WinNT before them, do not allow any
software applications to directly address hardware resources, such as
serial or parallel ports. This behavior is by design and is one of
the reasons the WinNT family of operating systems is so much more
stable than Win9x. For a hardware security dongle to work on these
operating systems, very specific device drivers must be provided by
the application's manufacturer.

If the application's manufacturer will not (or cannot because they
no longer exist) provide you with a patch, new device driver, or
product to render this legacy application Win2K/XP-compatible, you
have little choice other than to replace it, or continue using Win98.
You'll need to acquire a version of your application that is designed
specifically for Win2K/XP. Contact the manufacturer of the application
to see if any updates, patches, or upgrades are available.
