hi,
i just wanted to know exactly what is "Volume Licensing".

is it that, suppose i have "x" nos of computers, for that i buy 1 volume
licenced windows xp professional CD which can be installed in "x" nos of
computers rather then purchasing "x" nos of media CD seperately from
retailers.

well, if this is true, then will there be "x" nos of keys or just 1 key for
whole bunch of licenced volume CD?

is my assumption correct??? i went trough the contents in the net in
microsoft site but i cant exactly get the details as asked above.

can you help to clear me in this regard, pls

Close enough. You've got the right concept. You buy a "Volume Licence" from
a retailler for the amount of machines you need to licence.

Minor detail: The amount of CDs you buy (or create via copies) is
irrelevant. What matters is the amount of licences you own. You can buy a CD
(or several if you prefer) and create a conveniant amount of copies of the
CD for your own corporate use.

Just one key. That's why VLKs are preferred for mass deployments because the
licence administration is nice and easy.

Hope that clears it up!

I'm always surprised at "professionals" who STILL have to be asked:
"Have you checked (event viewer / syslog)".

You have it sort of right. With a volume license you get one key and one CD
that you use on all your computers. This key does not need to be activated.
This allows you to create disk images that can be deployed to all the
computers. What I think you are misunderstanding is the terms of the
license. For XP the volume license is an upgrade license. You still need to
purchase a version of Windows with a new computer. You can then erase the
new computer and use the volume license.

It's the "corporate" packaging of XP. VLA sales start at 5 "seats" and go
way up.

There is some price reduction, but the savings are for the most part
elsewhere - this packaging permits disk images to be made using a single
install key, and automated (scripted) installs are possible so a large
number of machines can be set up quickly. I can't remember if it requires
activation.

Yes. It's basically multiples of 5.

Yes, there is one key and one CD, and a legal title to use it for the
specified number of computers.

This single-key, multiple-install allowance is why with SP1 various VLA
install keys, which were widely pirated (for example the FGKGW key), were
blocked. SP1 and SP2 will not install on installations using those keys.

Correct. Volume Licenses are purchased from licensed resellers (not
directly from Microsoft), with 5 being the minimum number of "seats" one
must purchase.

There will be one Product Key and one Installation CD which can be used
for all of the installations.
