Using a laptop as a second monitor

As most of us know, Windows XP allows you to have multiple monitors (even
though not many people use this feature). I have a desktop and a laptop,
both with Windows XP. Is there any way to use the laptop as a "second
monitor" without purchasing any special software? As far as connecting the
two, I have an extra network card installed in my desktop, or would be
willing to buy a double-ended USB cable (I can't think of any other good
ways to connect the two). If anybody knows of a good way to do this, please
let me know. Thanks.

You can't separate the monitor out the way you describe, without obtaining
other software. Often the software communicates with the secondary system
via a network connection.
