Users of Treepad and Treepad Viewer - can you help with file associations?

John S.

I've been using the freeware Treepad Lite for some time, and find
it very useful, especially for saving information from
alt.comp.freeware.

Recently I installed the Treepad Viewer, specifically for its
additional search abilities.

I wonder if other users out there may be able to assist with
advice about fixing Treepad Viewer's habit of grabbing the .hjt
file association every time it is used.

I find that if I start Treepad Viewer it immediately grabs the
.hjt association, and all .hjt files from then on are associated
with the Viewer instead of Treepad itself. Having to restore the
file associations (via "Open With") is a nuisance, and they
switch back again anytime I use the Viewer.

Have other users found a way of overcoming this?

PS - have just found out that Treepad itself exhibits the same
behaviour and grabs the file association when it is run. This is
not a problem for me because that's what I normally want, but I
would like to occasionally run the Viewer without it grabbing the
association back off Treepad.

If anyone could suggest how I could disable the Viewer's grabbing
habit I would be very impressed :)

Thanks, John Selby.

Treepad files are simply text files. I believe that you can rename the
extension and then associate the new extension with Treepad. Try that then
open the file with the viewer. If the viewer doesn't also "grab" the new
extension, you should be good to go.

BTW, I wonder if Treepad Lite (freeware) has become
abandonware.

All treepad programs (versions) steal the association when they are run
(similar to the way most web browsers want to become the default browser
when they are run).

The easiest way to set the association back to Treepad Lite is to simply
open Treepad Lite.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for pointing that out. Also thanks to M (Mike) for
pointing out that the files are just text files and you can
change the extension and still open them with Treepad (but not
Treepad Viewer).

I've finally got my head round the behaviour of both Treepad and
Treepad Viewer - (they're not quite the same in the way they deal
with files) - and found a way that allows me to use the viewer
and Treepad at the same time.

You can't have one file in use by these two at the same time, so
I use the viewer to look at a copy of the file I'm using.

Another idea occurs to me to avoid the inconvenience of copies of files.
Presumably you want to be able to open a Treepad file from Explorer except
double-clicking causes either Treepad or the viewer to open, depending on
which was most recently used.
How about using the Sendto function of Explorer. Create shortcuts of both
Treepad and the Viewer and place these in your Sendto folder. Right-click
your Treepad file, then send it to either the editor or the viewer,
depending on your needs. I haven't explicitly tried this myself, but give
it a shot. . .

Thanks for the idea. Sendto works OK for both Treepad and
Treepad Viewer.

There's a snag though; you can't have them both accessing the
same file at one time. If I have a file open for editing, I
can't send the same file to the viewer and do a search on its
contents when last saved.

Funny though, I can open a Treepad file by "sending" it to
Wordpad, Treepad (or Treepad Viewer), and Metapad all at the same
time, but can't have a combination which includes Treepad and
Treepad Viewer at the same time.

Anyhow, thanks for your help. It's not often I wish to open the
viewer whilst I'm editing, and I can get by with using a copy of
the file I'm editing on those odd occasions.

Cheers, John S
