user-specific explorer.exe problems

R

rarewolf

I am having frequent problems with explorer.exe crashing and posting
the usual error message that sends info off to microsoft. The problem
is frequent enough that I cannot leave file explorer windows open more
than a couple of minutes without the problem happening.

I searched this group the other day, and saw some posts that might
imply my computer has been invaded, or that some file may be
corrupted. I logged into this multi-user domain-associated XP as
administrator and scanned my drives with MacAfee (installed) and
Kaspersky (online). I also ran 'SFC /scannow', and none of these
efforts suggested problems.

I worked all of yesterday as administrator without the problem
happening, but today I am logged in typically as a power user, and the
problem is happening every few minutes (while a file explorer is
open).

Can someone help with troubleshooting this?

TIA & cheerios from the Avalon Peninsula )

go through these cleaning steps to see or get a clear opinion on how
clean your machine is:
= Click Start >> Control Panel>>Network and Internet Connections >> Double
click Internet Options.
On the IE properties windows you will see these Tabs:
General | Security | Privacy | Content | Connections | Programs |
Advanced.
Under General Tab clear your History, Internet Files and Cookies.
Then click on Advanced tab and scroll down to under the Browsing Option:
[&] Browsing

[ ] Disable script Debugging (internet Explorer) <= check this box
[ ] Disable Script Debugging (Other) <= check this box

Then click on Programs Tab and click Manage Add-Ons and Disable all non
Verified Add-Ons (You should Renable them later one-by-one and see the
culprit and update it or remove it.

Nass ... thanx for your response!)

It took me several days to get thru your list of cleaning tools, but I
am now more satisfied than before my computer is clean -- leastwise
the adminstrator logon -- because I am now in my own logon and the
problem persists.

I had 2 failures this morning, and regarding use of the event viewer
for "Application" events, for each failure it lists 2 'Error' events.
The errors show the following text:

time 10:04:39:
"Faulting application explorer.exe, version 6.0.2900.3156, faulting
module ntdll.dll, version 5.1.2600.2180, fault address 0x00001010."
time 10:04:44:
"Fault bucket 479124178."

time 10:54:52:
"Faulting application explorer.exe, version 6.0.2900.3156, faulting
module ntdll.dll, version 5.1.2600.2180, fault address 0x00001010."
time 10:55:48:
"Fault bucket 479124178."

The DLL, ntdll.dll, is in the 'Windows\system32\' directory, and I
have no idea what its function is.

Comments ... thoughts ... suggestions??

TIA )

I should add -- I sent the event off to MS via the link provided by
the event viewer. The "H&S Ctr" listed many possibilities -- the
closest description:

"The Explorer.exe process may unexpectedly quit when you try to search
for a file in Windows XP or in Windows Server 2003

Discusses a problem that may occur after the Windows 2000 Resource Kit
is installed in Windows XP or in Windows Server 2003. To work around
this problem, uninstall the Windows 2000 Resource Kit."

Needless to say ... I haven't installed the Win2k resource kit ...
