User missing from the user list

I am caught in a trap and need some help. I just reformatted a HD and did a
clean install on an old Pentium 233. Created the Administrator password and
can log on with no problem. I can also log on as another user, say Fred. I
am not sure how Fred got created as a user, unless it happend when I used
that name initially as the computer name on our network. When I tried to add
Fred as a user I got a message that the name already existed, and so I tried
logging on with that name and it worked. I subsequently renamed the computer
to be consistent with the other names on the network and the user Fred can
still log on.

In any case, my problem is that Fred does not show up in the list of users,
so I cannot change the user properties. (I need to temporarily give him
admin privileges to install some software). I also cannot delete that user
since it is not visible. And yes, I have looked for the Fred user when
logged in both as Administrator and as Fred.

Any ideas for either deleting Fred or making him show up so I can change the
user group membership?

Run this command from a Command Prompt:

net user Fred /delete
