Using WD2002, I would like to use letter variants not in normal fonts when
transcribing old documents. Is there a way I can do (for example) an 'm' with
a tilda or perhaps a long dash over it?

I've just spent a little time playing with this: it is just right for what I
wanted, and as well I now have a huge list of more facilities hidden in there
to learn about!Thank you for your fast response.
