user defined access to XP Home via workgroup

Has anyone cracked the problem of setting up user defined access to XP home
from a workgroup LAN.
I have booted to safe mode etc to set up permissions and access, disabled
the guest account, set up local accounts, set forceguest to 0 but inbound
still seem to be recognised as guest connections and will not be accepted.
Setting forceguest to 0 does not seem to stop this behaviour. Or am I doing
something else wrong. Or can XP Home simply not allow this setup. Neither
win98 nor XP clients will connect
Thanks for any help!

I've not tried this with XP Home, but my understanding of how this
works agrees with your observed behaviour.

Using safe mode to access the normal security features and to turn off
Simple File Sharing ( ForceGuest=0 ) is all very well, but as I understand
it, re-booting to normal mode re-asserts Simple File Sharing ( resets
ForceGuest=1 ). Thus all inbound connections are authenticated via the
Guest account once again. It may or may not also re-enable the Guest
account, I'm not sure.

Now if the Guest account is still disabled, access will be denied.
Also, if the NTFS permissions have had Guest ( as part of the 'Everyone'
group ) removed in safe mode, then once again, access is denied. You'd need
to re-set the NTFS permissions.

With Simple File Sharing enabled, the clients should have been able to
connect, before you changed anything in safe mode.

I'd recommend you use XP Pro for this.

Many thanks. I've spent so many hours on this following people who say it
can be done!
Is there no way to turn off forceguest in XPH?
