User accounts don't work properly after XP Pro upgrade

I recently installed a new copy of XP Pro over a very old one, on a
multi-user PC.

Now, none of the user accounts work properly. "User Accounts" in
control panel shows some (correctly as "limited user", the rest (the
most commonly used ones) as "unknown type".

I can set them all to administrator accounts and they work fine, but
lose it when I change them back to "limited user". XP also fails to
maintain the "power user" group into which I put the user accounts so
that the wireless network would work properly.

When the accounts are set as limiter user accounts, I cannot load
software. MS word says it cannot read normal.dot and says any file I try
to load is in use by "another user".

Firefox and Thunderbird refuse to load the profile or allow me to create
a new one, citing inability to access various config files.

Etc Etc

My family can use their accounts so long as I leave them as
administrator accounts, but I am real unhappy about doing that.

Can anybody suggest what is wrong and how I might fix it.

yes, though I started with a new copy because I had doubts about the one
I started with, though that worked just fine.

i think that you should try to log in to the other account and then try
to make it a limited user account through that account, rather than
doing it through your account. if that doesnt work then you should
consider formatting.. that is the last option. personally i hate
formatting my computer. it takes too long.

Hi,
I've changed account types back and forth a couple of times- just
doesn't work when I switch back to limited user. meantime, I'll leave
them all as admin accounts, though I am asking for a heap of maintenance
problems down the track when family members discover what they can do now.
 
Dont worry about what the family can do. just make sure that they dont
make you a limited account. lol.. otherwise, can you delete their
accounts. if you can do that then do so and make then all sign in
through Guest account. that should solve your problem.
