Hi

Yet another problem I am not having a good week or two here

I am now having problems with My user account

I have only users on my pc . I am the only one with an administrator
account and my wife is a limited user

Recently out of nowhere i keep getting an error message when i try to change
anything in msconfig saying " an access denied error was returned while
attempting a change. You may need to log on using an administrator account to
make specific changes.

i dont understand

Can anuone help?

I run windows xp on an OEM disk if that makes any difference

Regards

Craig

you can try comparing
the issues you are encountering
in normal mode with safemode.

log into safemode w/networking
and fiddle around those same
features and see what your results
are....

a helpful freeware from microsoft.com
is called profile hive cleaner. It may
or may not fix the issue with your
account, but it certainly wouldn't hurt
to have it installed....

There have been several people over the recent post posting with this same
problem, but no clear resolutions, as I recall. What changes were made to
the system between the time things worked and now? Any windows updates,
software installs?

Have you tried a system restore to a time right before the problem occurred?
Do you image the system? If so restore a previous image.

Hi Craig

If you use Zone Alarm's paid-for version, there is an "operating system
firewall" that can stop you making changes and cause this message.
Another likely culprit is McAfee. Are you using McAfee antivirus or
security suite?

Here's what "trombs", a McAfee development engineer, said on their
support forum:
(see http://forums.mcafeehelp.com/viewtopic.php?t=89544 )
To clarify, when you modify anything in MSConfig, Windows attempts to
change the registry settings for everything in the MSConfig list. When
Windows reaches the McAfee items and attempts to change them, McAfee
prevents this from happening and Windows shows an error. This is a good
thing from a protection standpoint, as malware could otherwise use the
same mechanism to shut down your McAfee protection.

I would have expected that when I make a change in MSConfig, Windows
would only change the settings for the application I tried to change.
But that's not how it works. MS apparently doesn't want to modify
MSConfig to do so. Hence, the error.

In the end, even if you see this error, whatever changes you made will
be saved, unless you tried to turn off a McAfee product. If that's your
goal, it's best to do this within SecurityCenter.

So according to him, any changes you make in Msconfig *will* apply
despite the error message. It seems you'll just have to put up with it as
long as you use McAfee, and there's nothing to worry about as long as
the changes you make *are* being accepted -- you might want to check
this.

Here are some other references on the McAfee forum to the same problem.

Hope this helps you :-)
