LOL! There is no advice unless knowing your friend's needs.

I vote for Vista Ultimate if you have the following two conditions
(which I do):

You bought the latest hardware, such as a Core 2 Duo chip, in Asia for
20% of the USA price (no joke! And it can't be counterfeit, since
it's hardware--I checked the chip out and it's for real). The Core 2
is about 3 times as fast as a Pentium 4, and you'll need the extra
horsepower since Vista is a resource hog.

You got a pirate copy of Vista, completely cracked, for $3.

Otherwise stick with XP IMO.

What a bloody stupid question.

Depends there are pros and cons of each. I have both. Vista has a
better search than XP, very nice graphics, more security, higher
price, needs more RAM, more of a resource hog, etc. If he has at
least 2 GB RAM and likes cutting-edge technology, go with Vista. Both
O/Ses will have Service Pack releases early 2008.

Not at all. It is a very common question, at least in the USA.
(Perhaps you don't talk with many computer users.)

If the original poster had given us the detailed spec of the computer it
would be installed into and its use, then it may have been a valid
question. Until we know those details, it's impossible to advise. Hence
my response.

Your friend should study the feature set of each OS and select the one
the best fits his computing needs (of which you've told us nothing) and
which is best suited to support his existing software (of which you've
told us nothing) and peripherals (of which you've told us nothing).

I'm afraid that no one can help if you don't provide at least a
modicum of pertinent information.

Help us help you:

You've never seen $5.00 Knock-of Rolex watches or Gucci purses?

From MY perspective, get Vista.

With Vista there is much less chance of your machine being compromised by
malware which will send me bags of spam via a trojan or try to infect me
with replications of itself or try to steal my passwords.

I would prefer you get Vista.

And who said this PC was going to used on the Internet?

Your getting spam has much more to do with your broadcasting your email
address (are you (e-mail address removed)) than what os you are using.
Assuming one takes reasonable precautions, viruses are not a problem.
Spam is, I used to get a lot, now I get virtually none. I believe isp's
are helping out here. All I did was get new addresses and stop showing
in ng's).

Mike;
You have given insufficient information for anyone to help your friend
make an informed decision.

Initially I would suggest Windows Vista since the computer is new.

Is all the hardware verified by the hardware manufacturers as Windows
Vista compatible?

How much memory?
1 GB RAM is the minimum for most while some need 2 GB RAM or more.

It all the essential software compatible with Windows Vista.
Most seems to be but that depends on your friends specific needs.

Windows Vista works well on two older computers of mine.

It is a stupid question ONLY if it is not asked.

If you did not like the question, instead of suggestion the OP is
stupid or asks stupid questions and leaving it at that, you could have
suggested ways of better asking the question.
You could also have asked for more information so the OP can be better
helped.

John;
Are you able to respond intelligently?
Or do all your posts have to suggest others are "stupid"?

Laptop, Toshiba Tecra S1 all original except 1 GB RAM added for a
total of 1.5 GB RAM.
The Desktop is a mix of parts I acquired, the newest part being FX5500
video card and additional 1 GB RAM.
It has an AMD 2400 processor.

Now I answered your question.
Are you able to help the OP?
Or are you limited to criticism?

AFAIK, no one did.
But remember, the internet is not the only way to get malware.
There are others and the others may be more dangerous.

I might be able to help if I knew what the spec of the PC is he's
intending to install the OS on and what use it will get, but I see as
yet, he's unwilling to come forward and respond.

John.

John.

Maybe... he is at work? or sleeping. People come here for help and not
to be criticized, if you have such a problem with the OP's questions
and his schedule, why don't you just leave his question... allow
someone else to help and move on???

"he's unwilling"
That is an assumption.
Unless you know more than what the OP said, you do not know.
It is best not to ASSUME.

You could have asked what you felt you needed instead of suggesting
stupidity which helps no one.
