Use Simple File Sharing (Recommended)

G

Geoff Aukett

Hi all,

Is this odd or am I just being dim! On my network at home I have enabled
simple file sharing by going to folder options and ticking the box "Use
Simple File Sharing (Recommended)" easy.

I have just been to a mtes house who is setting up a network and said "I
know how to do that" like you do. When I went to folder options, the entry
"Use Simple File Sharing (Recommended)" was not there? and both his laptop
and his desktop.

Please could someone tell me why this is/how to get this back as we cant
semm to get his network connected and I am sure this is what we need to do.

Thanks

Geoff.

In My Computer select Tools/Folder Options. Select the View tab and at the
bottom in the Advance Settings the last option should be Use simple file
sharing (Recommended). Make sure it is checked.

Hope it helps,

You can turn off or on simple file sharing in folder options in xp pro only.
XP Home does not have this option.
But anyway, I doubt that's the prob with getting the network connected. It
just deals with permissions for allowing or denying access to local or
shared files or folders. With it on or off network connectivity should be
unaffected.

Make sure you scroll all the way down, (Tools > Folder Options > View (tab).

It is not there on an XP Home edition, because it is enforced in that -
like it or not - so there is no option

so what do you do when you have access denied problems on Home XP. I
did a non destructuve re=write on my HP with XP and service pack 2 and
when it was finished I couldn't access any on the folders on the
desktiop! and of course I don' t have the option of Use Simple file
Sharing.

How do i remove the access denied problem. I would appreciate it before
i throw the computer out the window.

Hi

In WinXP Home, you must start the computer in safe mode to get access
to the Security tab.

That is described at the top (almost) of this article:

HOW TO: Take Ownership of a File or Folder in Windows XP

If you boot Home to Safe Mode, and use the logon called Administrator,
then simple file sharing is disabled and you can set access permissions
