Use reinstallation CD to install Win XP?

Hi,
I am new at this. My school has several Win 2000 computers. Many of
them used to be XP, but someone a while back removed that and installed
2000, I assume so that all lab computers would be the same. I need to get
rid of 2000 and install XP. For the ones that were "downgraded" from XP to
2000, we have XP reinstallation disks. We tried using one of them and it
worked, but now, when you start it up, it asks you if you want to run 2000
or XP. How can I get rid of 2000 all together so that we do not have both
versions on that machine? Then, can I use the XP reinstall disks on the
other machines and not end up with the same problem? Thanks a bunch!

You almost certainly used the CD incorrectly. Please describe exactly
what you did.

Please do not multi-post/re-post in the future - even if you left out
details in the first posting. Just continue the conversation.

From your other posting (another group):
Hi. We need to install Win XP over Win 2000 on several school
computers. I have read up on it online and know that I need to do
a clean install of XP. Could anyone please tell me the steps to do
this or direct me to a web page that would tell me how? Thanks!

Why do you *have* to do a clean installation?
Is it because you are putting Windows XP Home Edition?
Is it because you have an OEM copy of Windows XP?

Now is a great time to point you to one of the easiest ways to find
information on problems you may be having and solutions others have found:

Search using Google!
http://www.google.com/
(How-to: http://www.google.com/intl/en/help/basics.html )

Using nothing more than your subject for a search term...
http://www.google.com/search?q=Clean+Install+of+XP

The first hit is likely more detail than you would ever thought you needed:
http://michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html

Hope that helps.

Come back and comment - after all - this is archived indefinitely.

The "reinstall" disks are not XP Upgrade disks. You will need to
backup each / every PC so to "keep" important files / documents.
Then, erase the PC and use the "reinstall" disks. Then, you must
reinstall all applications needed and put back the backed up files /
documents.

If you have multiple PCs to "update" to XP and serveral do not have
the XP "reinstall" CD (or never had,) you really should be looking at
Sysprep (???) process. This process will let you set up one PC with
XP and all applications. The, you should be able to create an install
image ehich will let you copy this "set up" multiple time. You can
then enter an XP CD key on eack

(NOTE: I do believe this is a OEM prep setup and not sure if this is
Sysprep or not.)
