Use Microsoft Word to edit e-mail messages check box is grayed out

I am trying to use Microsoft word as my email editor.

When I go to Tools>Options>Mail Format

The Use Microsoft Office Word 2003 to edit e-mail messages check box is
grayed out and so is the Use Microsoft Office Word 2003 to read Rich Text
e-mail messages box.

How can I get these boxes to go active so I can use word as my email editor?

Thanks!!!
 
Make sure Outlook is the 2003 version--same as Word and Word 2003 is
installed and working properly.
