Surely someone will declare this off topic, but I don't know where else to
put it.

Every time I try to use my Tripp-Lite USB 2.0 hub it _seems_ like I start
having wierd things happen. Turning off my USB external HD takes several
minutes - if I can get it to do the "Safely remove hardware" thing AT ALL.
I've spent as much as an hour and a half trying to get it to release the
external, waiting for this or that to do it's thing and respond on
successive occasions.

Is this a hardware or software problem. Are USB hubs prone to trouble?

Right-click My Computer and select Properties. Then click on the System
Restore tab. What is the status of your USB drive? If it's being
monitored, try turning off System Restore (just for the USB drive). Any
difference?
