I'm running XP Pro on a compaq Evo N800v with 2 usb
ports. From one port I have a hub. Connected to the hub
is a keyboard and mouse. When I use the remaining free
port on the pc and free port on the hub to connect to a
printer (hp psc 750) and to a broadband modem (tried it
both ways round) the pc grinds to a halt and CPU usage
rises and remains at 100%. Is this a fault or am I
expecting too much from the hub?

Sounds like the USB port can not provide enough power to all your USB
device. If your hub does not have its own power supply, I would look at
replacing it with a powered hub.

Broadband modems are power hogs, usethem with a power adaptor, better
yet, get a NIC and connect the modem through it.
