USB wireless card problems

Any wireless brand usb adapters that I install on my XP
computers seem to behave the same way. They work great,
and then abruptly decide they don't want to work
anymore, that is untill you plug them in to a new usb
port. this of course reinstalls the correct driver,
(again) and the device works. The same thing happens with
my laptop in the usb, and PCMCIA versions of vendor
cards. What is causing this to happen.
