USB Unknown Device

I have 4 USB ports: 2 in the front of my desktop and 2 in
back. All worked perfectly about a year ago. Since that
time however, when I attempt to plug a new device into the
front ports, Windows starts the New Hardware wizard and
automatically loads an Unknown Device. There is no error
code next to the Unknown Device and the VID/PID identifier
is all zeros. If I try to uninstall the unknown device, it
comes back when I restart, "Scan for new hardware", or
plug a new deivce into those 2 ports. If I plug that same
new device into the back USB ports, Windows correctly
installs the proper driver. If I disable the unknown
device and plug in a new device, XP adds a second unknown
device. If I update the driver for the device, it appears
to copy the new driver, but the status says "no drivers
are installed". I have tried to reinstall XP, remove all
USB devices, disable non-essential startup programs, and
restart in safe mode - the following info shows in the
SETUPAP.log file:

Generally you must install the software for the new device BEFORE connecting
it to the PC.

This problem occurs with plug and play devices as well.
For example, I have a new Microsoft thumb drive which I
plug into my back USB ports and everything installs
automatically and it opens up a new drive letter in
explorer . However, when I plug that same device into the
front port, I get Unknown Device.

Disconnect (and preferably unisntall) all devices connected to your USB
devices.... then go into the Device Manager and uninstall all your USB
Controllers.

Reboot the PC.

XP should re-detect all of them and reinstall the drivers. Then start
adding the USB devices one at a time.

Thanks for your continued replies. As stated in my
original post, I disconnected all of my USB devices,
disabled all of my startup applications via MSCONFIG, and
restarted in safe mode. When I restarted, XP still
installed the unknown device. The working USB devices no
llonger appeared in my device manager after I disconnected
them and restarted, so do I still need to uninstall each
and every one of them?
