USB to Parallel help requested.

I have a client who needs to hook up an HP Laserjet 6MP to his laptop
via a USB to Parallel adaptor cable. He is running Windows XP Pro
SP-2. The OS recognizes the cable but will not install the printer. On
manual install when attempting a test print, the printer lights flash
a few times as if receiving data, then just hang. When the continue
print button is pressed, one line of ASCII is printed on top of the
page and then nothing. Any thoughts?

First of all have you tested the printer by printing a test page?
Unplug the printer from the computer and then hold down the button on
the front until the lights start flashing, the printer should print a
test page.

Which drivers have you tried? Usually the ones supplied with XP should
be all you need.

Does the USB port work with other devices? Have you tried the USB to
Parallel cable with another printer?

Yes, of course. The printer is fine.

XP and HP drivers.
Does the USB port work with other devices? Have you tried the USB to
Parallel cable with another printer?
Yes the port is good.

Thanks for trying to help, but I wouldn't have asked for help without
first checking out all the usual suspects.

If you can't get that to work, you could try using the infrared port
on the 6MP.
The laptop may even have an infrared port; if not you can get a
USB-infrared dongle for$15 or so. Would be more convenient than a
cable for a laptop as well.
