USB Thumb Drive

When I try to open a file on my 1GB Sony thumb drive at my HP deskltop I get
this message:

"Files cannot be opened directly from this device. Please copy the file to
local folder and open the copy from there".

When I use the thumb drive with my IBM Thinkpad I do not get this error
message.

Help, please...

Download Process Explorer, unzip to a directory, place a shortcut to
your desktop - and start it
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/ProcessesAndThreads/ProcessExplorer.mspx

when you get this error message go to PE the process should be in red,
double click on it and read it's image - it will show the program
responsible - it's a start.

Thank you for your quick response.

I loaded PE, found what I thought to be the offending program, killed it,
and the problem still exists.

Any other thoughts from anyone?

Read the autorun.ini file (root of the USB pen drive) see what it's
running, - you could even rename it to _autorun.ini to stop it from
loading whatever.

-Windows defaults to read and run the autorun.ini file when the USB is
inserted. -no security problems there....-

Thanks for your input.

Searched for "autorun.ini" file and it is not on any disk or thumb drive.

What next?

Maybe you can't see it.

Open Windows Explorer (WinKey+E), under TOOLS, open Folder Options,
then the View Tab. Change these settings:

Select Display the contents of system folders
Select Show hidden files and folders
UnSelect Hide Extensions for known file types
Unselect Hide Protected operating system files (ignore popup)

Then you should be able to explore to the files in question or use
the FIND (WinKey+F) utility.

And I'm out of guess's, my assumptions were problems created by a
program being run when the USB was inserted.

Thanks Pennywise...I already had these settings, but I tried again, and no
luck.

Thanks for your perseverance.
