USB Sux- problem with external HD drive

OK, here's the problem after 6 hours and I still can't get my western
digital external 120g USB drive to work. The problem is as soon as I plug it
in the system freezes. I think it has something to do with the mouse. I have
2 rear and 2 front USB ports on my system and trying another plug didn't
help. I have swapped 3 USB mice including an PS/2 serial mouse and had no
luck. BTW, I'm running XPhome... and I tested the drive on my other
system(Win98SE) with same mice and it works. From the old days not so long
ago I would say I have a hardware conflict, but wasn't USB created to solve
that problem??? The new WD drive has an external power supply so the load
should be taking off the systems PS.

Thanks

is there any software or drivers that came with the drive? You loaded the drivers then plugged in the drive? USB 2.0 or 1.1. if
you disconnect all USB devices and then plug in the drive, will it work?

How many devices plug into USB at same time? try to remove the mouse, and
use a standard PS/2.
Did you install the USB driver of 120g WD external HD? you must instal
first.
Assume your mother board offers USB 2.0, because most external USB HD only
works with 2.0

Other than that, it should work.

Directions state boot system and plug drive in & XP will detect and install
drivers. None came with drive.
