usb-stick problems

I have problems with usb usage in a xp pro fully patched.
The usb stick is detected correctly but the OS doesn't assign a letter
to it.
If you assign it manually you can acces the information inside trough
the disk manager. But it doesn't appear in my computer or windows explorer.
Any ideas?

If you assign a drive letter through disk manager, it should be visible
in explorer or any Windows dialog box, even the command line.
