USB Root Hub Ports

Brian

I have six of these ports, four on the back of the computer (two of which
are in use) and two on the front. For the past couple of years, each time I
connected a USB cable to a front port, I hear a sound (just as I do when I
disconnect) and on My Computer and Explorer, drives I and J depending on
which front port I connected to, are displayed. This is a handy way to
download photos directly from my digital SLR camera as well as downloading
the contents of memory cards.

Now for some reason, when I connect to either the I or J port, neither of
these drives are displayed in My Computer or Explorer. In Computer
Management, I have right clicked on the six USB root hub entries, clicked
properties and the message this device is working properly is displayed. I
do not know what has happened and I need help to have the USB ports I and J
display again in My Computer and Explorer. Many thanks -

When you describe "Computer Management", it sounds more like the
"Device Manager". Did you go under:
Computer Management -> Storage -> Disk Management
and see if they show up there?
If they do, try right-clicking on them and select "Change drive letter
and Paths".

There's also a lot of good info on USB Drive problems here:

John - Thank you for all of this information. However, I have yet to create
I and J
drive letters for the two USB ports on the front of my computer. Again,
connecting and disconnecting the USB cable always results in a sound, but no
Windows Explorer drive letter.
