Hi, hope somebody can help me with this, im trying to set up a broadband
modem but at the stage where i connect the modem to my pc via a USB my pc
will not detect the modem. i have also tried connecting a printer via USB
and i had the same problem. This looks like a problem with the USB port,
does anyone know how i could resolve this? I have tried re-installing
windows and have tried some downloads from microsoft. I am running windows
xp.

Thanks in advance

Can you try another port?

Is the USB port you are using on the front panel of your computer? Sometimes
those aren't connected inside! The case manufacturer provides the connector
but the motherboard doesn't have the hardware or perhaps they just plain
forgot to connect it. Sometimes the case manufacturer provides a cable with
a mobo connector but the pin out does not match the connector on the mobo.
Intel are have a standard but some other mobo makers use an older layout.

What is the make and model of your motherboard? You will need to install
your chipset drivers to get USB working.

They are working.

2 things.
make sure you have turned on/enabled the usb ports in the bios.

under device manager usb devices you might be sure and disable the option for shut down the ports to save power.

Aaarrggghhh HTML <PLONK>

Simon,

If you haven't solved this problem, you may consider doing this:
1. Install Windows XP SP2
2. Use Device Manager to delete all devices related to USB - Generic, Root,
Controller, etc.
3. Restart Win XP.

That how I resolved this seemingly stupid problem.

Good Luck.
