USB Printer will not install after upgrade to Vista

I recently upgraded to Windows Vista. Afterwards, I noticed I needed to
reinstall my printer (HP Officejet 4315). I went to the HP site and made
sure that I got the updated printer drivers after I plugged in the printer
and Vista would not automatically find it.

I installed the HP software, but my computer will still not find the
printer.

What can I do? The printer works fine on my other computer that is not
upgraded yet.

What you may have to do is disconnect your printer from the computer.
Remove the current drivers you just installed. Reboot the machine.

Install the drives again (keeping the printer disconnected) and once you
install the drivers, wait until the software asks for the printer to be
connected.

Once I had my printer installed, I received a spooler error. To fix the
spooler error, I had to go into Admin, Services, and stop and start the
spooler 2 or three times. After that, it worked.

Your mileage may vary. The printer I had was an HP Laserjet 1022. Still no
Vista drivers on the HP site.

Good luck.

You should have loaded the driver and then plugged in the printer not the
other way around. Can I suggest you go to the HP site again a click for
install instructions for your model

Thanks. I did that, but when it gets to the point of checking for the
printer, when I plug it in it is not found by the software.

Here's how to get XP HP driver working in Vista. Doesn't work for Vista64.
HP told me this work-around for HP1018 LaserJet and it worked for me. Might
for your printer too.

1) Insert the CD-ROM that came with your Printer and install the drivers of
windows XP on your Windows Vista computer. These XP software & drivers are
Vista Compatible after tweaking the Printer Properties. Reboot after
installing. 2) Go to Start/Printers. Right click HP LaserJet 1018 then click
Properties. An HP LaserJet Properties window should have popped up. 3) Click
the Advanced Tab. Click the Print Processor button located at bottom of
window. 4) Select print processor as IMFPrint. Then Select Default Data Type
as RAW. Click OK. 5) Now return to the main HP LaserJet Properties window
and click the General Tab. On the Bottom of that window, Click the Print
Test Page Button. A test page should be printing out if you adjusted the
printer properties correctly.

Double check that you have the correct printer driver for Vista (32 or 64
bit). Contact HP if their driver doesn't work
