USB Printer port not available "the specified port is unknown"

Fairly new to XPe image creation. I've got an image running under VMWare
and when I plug in a USB printer (HP Deskjet 840C) the new hardware wizard
runs find but ends up with an error "the specified port is unknown"

When I do the same on an XPPro guest under VMWare everything works fine.

I noticed that when I plug in a printer to either XPPro or XPe, the list
of USB devices in the HardWare manager gets a new 'USB Printing', which I
presume is expected. If I disconnect the printer it goes away in both
XPPro and XPe. This leads me to believe that I've got at least some of
the right components in the image.

What is different is if I plug the printer in, and cancel the add hardware
wizard. Under XPPro I can go into the add printer wizard, do a manual
install and under ports It shows a "USB0001 (Virtual Printer Port for
USB)", under XPe there are no USB ports available.

My guess is I'm missing some component that provides this. Any
suggestions?

Thanks.

Have you tried running TAP on an XPPro after installation of the
printer? Chances are there's an extra component for that Virtual printer
port.

Just tried that, use imported using Component Designer and compared the
log files from component designer both before and after.

The only difference was that it included USB Printing Support and HP
DeskJet 840C driver (which are both already in my XPe image)

So nothing new there.

In that case all I can suggest is to monitor the installation with
inctrl 5 and/or the regmon/filemon etc tools from sysinternals, to see
if you can determine what the build is missing.

What installation are you referring to? I cancelled the
installation of any printer drivers in all cases. In the case of XPPro
the USB printer port is visible in the list of ports when manually adding
a new printer. In the case of XPe the USB printer port is not. Even
though in both cases the hardware manager shows USB Printing in the USB
devices node.

As best I can tell something is missing that provides the actual USB
printer port.

Ah. I misunderstood, I thought an additional port was showign up in
device manager when you connected the USB printer. Even so, filemon etc
should show you what files are being accessed when you go to manually
add the printer, which should give an idea of what is missing in the build.

Solved the problem by adding "Print Administration Scripts" which brought
in several other components:

Server Printing
Class Install Library - Image Device
ICM User Interface
Primitive: IExpress
Windows Image Acquisition Core

Which of these actually solved the problem, I'm not 100% sure. As we'll
likely need the "Print Administration Scripts" anyway I see no reason to
chase this down further.
