USB printer no longer recognized any more

Andy

I have been using my Samsung printer on my PC (XP Pro/SP2) for over a
year. The printer has been kept on the same USB port.

A few weeks ago I started using a plug-in USB memory card.
I also applied this month's (May's) Microsoft Windows Fixes.

----

Now, when I try to print XP says it does not recognise the device
(the printer). I tried plugging it in to other USB ports but that
did not help. An XP balloon still says it does not recognise the
device.

Yes, I have checked if the USB cable is plugged into the printer!

Can someone advise me?

Andy

WHAT I HAVE DONE

I have uninstalled the printer's driver and reinstalled them.

I have followed the steps here (about halfway down):
http://www.daniweb.com/techtalkforums/thread7700.html
Step 1: Remove Hidden Devices
Step 2: Remove all oem*.inf files
Removing the VID entries from the registry
Reboot
Re-insert printers USB cable.

Install the printer on another system to see that the printer is actually
working and working properly. Then we'll take it from there.

There is a lot of chatter on the net about Microsoft patches. Try
uninstalling
the ones just before this problem occurred.

We have established that the printer in fact does work on another system. So
now it is sure that the system you are trying to get it to work with is
having problems, not the printer. You have also established that the USB
ports are not the problem, because you say that you have plugged the printer
into all USB ports and none of them work with the printer. You have also
established by reinstalling the printer drivers that there is not a drivers
problem per se. I would concur with Frank that you should uninstall all the
MS patches that you installed before the printer stopped being recognized.
You should also remove the printer and drivers from the system. If you have
a recent Restore Point; that was made before the printer problems began, you
might want to restore the system to that date. Then, go ahead and reinstall
the printer.
