USB Printer and External HD not Recognized

I have a machine with XP SP2 op sys on C and D drives. On C drive everything
works okay so the hardware is fine. On D drive I have loaded the printer
drivers from Windows (no CD) and it loads okay but does not print. I loaded
the printer from the CD and it asks to turn on the printer. Tried all the
Help stuff; printing from Notepad, DOS, etc. No Help. I plugged in an
external HD and the Power On light does not turn on. There is an Auto/Manual
switch on the back of the HD. In Manual the Power On light ligthts but the
computer does not recognize the HD in Disk Management. I disconnect and
connect both items and I don't get messages for new hardware. I run Add
Hardware and no plug and play devices are recognized. I looked at Device
Manager and see no yellow anything. On C drive when I pull the USB plug the
Power On light on the HD turns off. This seems to indicate tht the USB port
is the problem. I move the USB cable to another plug and no difference. I
tried another computer and no problems on C or D drives.

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanx
