USB Power During Standby

I saw a post about this, but the answer did not help me and I would
hope that some one could elaborate a little more. I have an external
hard drive enclosure connected via USB to my computer and would like it
to shut off when I put my computer into Standby. The enclosure has a
feature that will allow it to turn off when there is no longer power
given to the USB. Previous answers had said to check the power
management tab in device manger for the USB hub(s), but this doesn't
allow the drive to shut off when I put the computer in Standby. Could
some one please explain it a little more?

Thanks

Our practice has been to disconnect the external hard drive
when it is not in use and to power it off after disconnect.
IOW, why worry about something when it the question has been
resolved pre-emptively.

Because it's a pain to do that every time I use it.

The importance of having an external drive is that it is
"removable". If one wants to use it on a permanent basis
or if it's a "pain" to follow safe handling procedures, then
install a slave, internal hard drive.

This really depends on your computer model and operating
system (win2000? XP? ACPI mode active?)
How you verified that USB power is off when the computer
goes to standby?

I have this enclosure set up with my laptop as a Media Center (only
temporary until I get an MCE only box) and it will be permanent as
external either way. It holds 4 IDE drives.

As for the computer model, OS, etc...It's an Acer Travelmate 4021WLMi
with XP MCE 2005. I'm not sure what ACPI mode active is, but I know
the USB still gets power when I put it into standby because the
enclosure still runs when in standby and when I unplug the enclosure's
USB from the computer it turns off.
