Hi, all I have a Dell Dimension 8300 desktop computer. The problem is
that none of the USB ports seem to work anymore. Whether I plug in my
flash driver, a printer, etc, I don't get a message stating that new
hardware has been found, and the new hardware is not accessible.

In Device Manager all of the USB-related device are said to be working
properly. This is what I have done to try to help:

Ran various SpyWare and Virus programs
Ran all the Windows Updates (have WinXP SP2)
Flashed the BIOS to A07
Ran Norton SystemWorks 2006 utilities
Ran the RegSeeker registry Cleanup

I also installed another incarnation if WinXP, and have the same
problem.

I am pretty much out of ideas. Any help would be appreciated; thanks
in advance!!

Maybe the ports really are dead.

Your system uses 875P and probably ICH5/ICH5R Southbridge. If the
USB ports stop working, and you've tried the usual things, it may
be time to install a PCI USB card to use for USB ports. And that
will only cause problems, if you need to access the BIOS with a
USB keyboard. A separate USB card won't allow a USB keyboard to
work with the BIOS. A PS/2 keyboard will work in the BIOS, as
a workaround for that.

One last comment, I am not saying it caused this current problem, but
running a registry cleaner, generally causes more harm than good. If there
is a problem with the registry it is much wiser to manually edit/remove the
specific offending entries than to use a wholesale registry cleaner. We
routinely get posts in here where use of a registry cleaner is directly
linked to a new problem, but many times the problem doesn't show up right
away so it's harder to show the direct connection but it could still be the
cause.

Try removing all USB devices in device manager then controllers and reboot
and let windows re-install the drivers.

Thanks for advice everyone. I don't think all of the USB ports
happened to die at the same time, as some are integrated in the MoBo,
and other are not (the front). Also, they are all getting power (mouse
lights up when connected), they just don't see the device. I
uninstalled all USB-related devices in Device Manager and let Windows
re-install them on reboot; still no go. Thanks for the tip on the
RegCleaners, I'll keep that in mind!

Umm, you might enter BIOS and disable USB, restart entering windows then
reboot and enter BIOS again enabling them this time. I suspect you have a
driver conflict so if that doesn't work see if you can find updates for your
mobo including BIOS.

The part that would die are the USB controller chips themselves, not the
physical ports that you see, which are essentially just wires and
connectors. Front ports are wired extensions to the same chips that the back
ports are connected to. With onboard USB if the chips fail, or some part of
the circuitry, the motherboard needs repair or replacement to get USB back.
An open connection on the USB data lines could make all the ports
non-functional but the USB controller drivers can still show up as properly
installed and working in Windows.

Hi all. I am absolutely clueless, but here is my problem and I am hoping
someone can help. I am using my son's computer from college, a Sony Vaio
desktop, bought in 2001. It has Windows ME installed. I purchased a Lexmark
X8350 all-in-one copier, printer, scanner, fax and have had nothing but
errors. Lexmark support tells me I have to update my driver ports as the old
printer was in LPT1. In the back of my computer I have a usb port. On the
sides of the monitor I have two usb ports on each side. I tried to look for
updates but was totally confused. FYI, under "universal serial bus
controllers," it says: SiS 7001 pci to usb open host controller. Under that
it says: usb root hub. Greek to me! Can anyone walk a total novice through
updating driver ports? Can this be done? my email address is my name at
comcast.net. Please, anyone, contact me with your thoughts.

This is a Windows XP newsgroup. I suggest you post to a Win ME (or Win 98)
newsgroup. Here are some choices:

microsoft.public.windowsme.general
microsoft.public.windowsme.hardware
microsoft.public.windowsme.printing
microsoft.public.windowsme.setup

Disconnect the USB cable from the computer. Now run the setup software that
came with the printer. Do not plug the printer in until the software tells
you so. If the software finishes without asking for the printer, restart the
computer and plug the printer in AFTER the desktop comes back.

If that doesn't work, then tell us WHAT errors you are getting and when you
get them.

BTW, Lexmark is pretty much the most expensive printer to own... and Windows
ME is not the greatest version of Windows out there.

One reviewer here, considers the drivers on the X8350 to be lousy.
So more details may be necessary, to figure out where the problem is.

You might have to uninstall the printer and then reinstall .
