USB mouse stops working after installing Windows Service Pack 1

We have gotten new lab computers and I'm upgrading them
to Windows XP. The USB mouse works fine until I install
the Windows Service Pack 1 update.

Even if I turn the computer off, then plug in the mouse
and turn the computer on, the device is not recognized-
any help/explanation is greatly appreciated.

I tried searching before I posted to this newsgroup- none
of the help articles address this problem- any other
suggestions?
