USB mouse, flash drive fail to install

Running XP SP2 on HP dx2000 MT desktop. When I try to use a cordless mouse,
or a flash drive (both of which work fine on other computers), I get the
"found new hardware balloon" and then the wizard starts. I let it find the
software automatically. I think it finds the right software (whatever it is)
but it never gets beyond the next window, which sez "there is a problem
installing the hardware...the data is invalid. Click finish to exit the
wizard."

What is to be done? I have tried:
disabling USB universal host controllers
disabling USB root hubs, then rebooting
installing new device drivers (said nothing was newer than what I had)
downloading updates for Intel chipset drivers and installing same
editing the registry key that tells where XP looks for drivers (%root%inf,
etc.)

and a few other things, all to no avail.

Any suggestions? Thanks in advance,

Intel downloads for the chipset installation utility are confusing at best.
Locate youre boards chipset if listed,or match to an intel board with same,
go to its download page, try its version, sometimes the later versions wont
install to earlier boards.
