USB hubs and Windows XP PNP lockup

Symptoms: Windows 2000 crashes and Windows XP's PNP manager locks up when
using a USB hub with attached USB device and repeated add/remove's of hub and
device. I have checked the 2000 crash dump and it is in one of the Windows
USB drivers. I have a few for submission if needed.

I am in a production environment and we need to break connection to our USB
devices on production line. Regardless of whether I use a USB switch or a
device to break full contact with hub/device, I experience symptoms. If the
hub is removed from the chain, everything works without fail. But so far
using a Belkin 4 port hub or a Dlink 4 port hub, make/break cycles have
failed, usually failing well under a 100 cycles. Both of these devices do
not have their own and use Windows default drivers.

Are you using a self-powered or non-powered USB hub?
If using a non-powered USB hub, the PC's power supply
unit may be inadequate.

I have tried both ways. If the hub was underpowered, I would receive the
overcurrent warning from the OS. But even using a powered hub, most of the
time failures happen under 100 cycles, occassionaly I may reach a little over
300, but no more than that. Are there any tools that would have XP's PNP
manager log it's current state to be sent to MS? I have crash dumps from
2000 but no information from XP. When PNP is locked the up, XP will not
complete shut down and requires computer reset.
