USB HDD associated with wrong driver

I'm hoping someone can help with this. Somehow my external Western Digital
USB drive is now identified as a VMware USB device. If I connect it to
another XP computer it works just fine and I can access the data stored on
it. I can't locate any drivers for it on WD's website, I'm thinking because
the OS inherently contains them.

Thanks in advance,

Vinnie

Just to add to my post, I just attached the drive to another XP workstation
and here is the information I can get out of it in Device Manager.

Driver files - disk.sys and partmgr.sys
General - WD 1200BEVExternal USB Devide

So as you can see, there aren't any special drivers being used for this
device.

Thanks again

A couple of things you can try:

Delete the file:
C:\Windows\inf\INFCACHE.1
Delete the appropriate Registry entry under:
HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Enum\USB

Doing both the above should force a re-discovery of the device when
next inserted. As always, back up your registry before making changes
and it wouldn't hurt to make a copy of the INFCACHE.1 file before
deleting it just in case things go wrong.

HTH,
John
