I've just got a Blaze USB2 2.5" HDD unit, with a
Fujitsu HDD. When I plug it in Windows XP Pro
detects it, says it's ready to use, and there's a
'safely remove' icon in place.

However, I can't see a drive letter, or detect
its presence in My Computer or Explorer.

What do I need to do?

Open Disk Management and assign it a drive letter. To open Disk
Management do this:

from RUN type in "diskmgmt.msc" (no quotes). A dialog box will open
showing all your drives and what letters are assigned. The USB 2.0
drive will show up as "removable" and may be listed below your CD
drive. From here you can right click the drive and assign it a drive
letter.
