It depends on your motherboard. Consult the MB manual for a list of
potential boot devices. If a USB flash drive is listed, then check the BIOS
setup to be sure that it is the first type of boot device, CD second, and
hard disk last.
However, be warned that some programs insist on a floppy or nothing to get
drivers. The classic example is the installation of XP itself for RAID
and/or SATA and/or SCSI.
You can buy a new floppy drive for just a few dollars, maybe
as little as $5 and not more than $20.
Any XP qualified system will boot from a CD-ROM which is
better for XP because if you are running NTFS a W98 boot
floppy won't read the hard drive. [Unless you get extra
software]
