USB flash drives: not recognized

I messed up with my lap-top that runs on XP. Now it does not see
anylonger the USB flash drives.

The led of the drive is on and the proper tone comes out when
inserted. But NO window showing its content pops up (as instead
should).

The drive does neither show up in My Computer nor in the Storage
folder of Computer Management (in My Computer menu).

The Device Manager says everything is OK.

The exact same thing happens with the SD flash card inserted in the
PCMCIA adapter.

I would greatly appreciate any help.

I forgot to add that both processes of finding new hardware
(unuinstall/install and uninstall/reboot) leave the problem unchanged.
